SAN DIEGO’S NORTH COAST DISCOVERY MAP IS A PUBLICATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING ONLY THOSE BUSINESSES ALONG HIGHWAY 101 THAT ARE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED AND OPERATED BY LOCALS.

We hope you find this blog helpful in your planning to visit here, or while visiting. You should know that there will never be a chain or big-box store partnering with this guide. This guide is built by locals, for your benefit in search of the “California Dream”. We know you can go to Denny’s or Starbucks back in your hometown, and that’s not what you came here to experience. The Southern California spirit is alive, and we want to keep it alive by sharing it with those looking for it! You can be assured that the businesses, events and facilities we recommend on “Cruisin’ Highway 101″ are where we shop and eat and send our friends and family! Please, enjoy your stay, talk to the locals (we’re all pretty friendly!), and send us your thoughts, comments and suggestions on how we can make your next visit even better! San Diego: Historic North Coast Highway 101 - Wikipedia January 18th, 2008 at 10:58 am by Michael Bertrand

s21a.JPGSan Diego County Route S21 is a south-north running road serving the coastal communities of northern San Diego County, running from San Diego in the south to Oceanside in the north. The route is signed in many places as “Historic Route 101″ with the official Historic U.S. 101 shields. S21 follows the prior alignment of U.S. Route 101 through this region. The route is also called “Coast Highway 101″ in some places as well. This route was originally designated in 1968 and is 24.74 miles long.
Route SummaryCounty Route S21 begins at Interstate 5 in the north of San Diego as Genesse Avenue. The road then travels north into Del Mar, where it is called “Camino Del Mar”. While in Del Mar the route passes both the historic Del Mar Racetrack and through the historic downtown of Del Mar. In Solana Beach the route moves closer to the coast. Along this stretch it is named “Highway 101″ and the city has signed the route along its length with faux U.S. Highway shields that resemble the official U.S. 101 shields in use today, along with the state issued Historic 101 shield. Further north in Encinitas, the route’s name becomes “Coast Highway 101″, also in homage to the old U.S. Route. In Carlsbad it becomes “Carlsbad Blvd”. The route is named “Coast Highway” in Oceanside, and comes to an end at Interstate 5 in Camp Pendleton.

The section of this road between La Costa and Palomar Airport Road was once known as the Carlsbad Freeway. The majority of the route from the Del Mar city limit to Coast Highway (formerly Hill Street) in Oceanside are signed as Historic U.S. 101 and is also an unsigned Business Route Interstate 5.

Encinitas: Paper Rose to Close October 18th. Hurry by for a worthwhile visit! September 11th, 2008 at 7:30 am by Michael Bertrand

ad.JPG

To be unique in the “Funky” Leucadia district of Encinitas is a pre-requisite…and Kerrie Stewart’s “Paper Rose and Moon Mania Doggy Cafe” is/was certainly that.

But between current economics and a location not-quite-on Highway 101, conditions have proved too much for this one-of-a-kind shop.

“Sadly Paper Rose & Moon Mania Doggy Cafe has become a victim of the harsh economic times & is closing down. Our last day of trading will be Saturday October 18thwhich will also be a day of celebration, so please join us for the farewell party & some last minute special deals. In the meantime everything in the store is at our wholesale cost price, 50% off. We also have furnniture & fixtures for sale at rock bottom prices.A big warm thank you to all our regular customers, for all your support over the years. - Kerrie”

As one of few businesses located along Highway 101’s parallel Vulcan Avenue, it was a known struggle getting drive-by traffic. The very creative and well-appointed venue created by Kerrie and her staff, and the promotions they chose seemed to be having an effect on the amount of traffic, but it’s apparently proved too late. A shame for all of Leucadia’s redevelopment…and Encinitas as well. The Paper Rose is exactly what is needed along this historic corridor.

It is certainly worth a visit to see just how well a venue can be done!
